The DJ and broadcaster Tim Westwood have been accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women who say he took advantage of and sexually abused them because he was powerful in the music business.
It’s been said that the 64-year-old was sexually predatory in a series of incidents that allegedly took place between 1992 and 2017. Seven women told the BBC and the Guardian about their alleged stories and experiences with Westwood as part of a long joint investigation.
In a statement, his lawyers said that “any suggestion that he acts, or has acted, in the way that was said would be false and seriously defamatory.”
A few of the women say that they were looking for a way into the music business and that they agreed to meet Westwood in London to talk about music. A group of people says that Westwood took them to a flat where they had sex they didn’t want.
Westwood is said to have been 53 years old at the time. One of the women was said to be 19.
Another woman says that when she was 17 and Westwood was in his 30s, she was forced to have oral sex that she didn’t want.
Westwood is accused of groping young women while they were being photographed at events where he was DJing. Other claims say that he groped their bottoms and breasts while they were being photographed.
Four other women have told stories about how Westwood allegedly groped or touched them inappropriately while they were taking pictures with him at music events.
The BBC said on Tuesday that it was “shocked” by the claims. It said: “The BBC is against any kind of inappropriate behavior, and we are shocked to hear about these claims.” The BBC has very strict rules for everyone who works for the BBC, even people who work on TV shows.
There were anonymous accusations about Westwood being inappropriate on social media in June 2020. The women, who are all black, decided to tell their stories after the accusations came out.
During a statement at the time, Westwood denied any wrongdoing. He said that the accusations on the Internet were made up, false, and without any evidence.
The Guardian and the BBC, which has aired a documentary on BBC Three about the story, have since talked to seven women who say the DJ did different things.
The Guardian and the BBC know the names of all the women, even though they aren’t friends and haven’t talked. Police didn’t get a report from any of the women. All of them have asked to stay anonymous.
In the United Kingdom, Westwood has been a big name in hip hop and rap for the last 40 years. He is now 64. As the host of BBC Radio 1’s first Rap Show in 1994, he became the unmistakable voice of the genre.
He is credited with giving new artists a chance to shine on his show, while also getting some of the best rappers in the world, like Public Enemy and Jay-Z, to come on.
After 20 years, Big Dawg left Radio 1 as part of a change in the station’s Saturday night schedule. He now hosts a show on Capital Xtra and goes to a lot of clubs.
It was “appalling and disturbing,” a source at the BBC said. The BBC said it was not “sitting on” any information that could help with an investigation into the former Radio 1 DJ.
Lawyers for Westwood said he was a well-known and very successful DJ. A lot of people said that he strongly denied all of the serious accusations that were being made against him at the time.
It would be false and defamatory for anyone to say that he acts, or has acted, in the way that was described. To make it clear, they said he didn’t act the way they said he did.
The Guardian has asked Global, the company that owns Capital Xtra, where Westwood works, for comment.
They are women.
A woman named Isabel told the police in 2010 that she was sexually assaulted by Westwood. She was 19 at the time. At the time, he was 53. University graduate: I want to be a musician. I grew up singing gospel and writing my own songs in the Midlands.
Pamela’s story has a lot in common with Isabel’s. Pamela was 20 when she says she first met the DJ through friends. She is now in her 40s. She was a member of the youth rap scene in 2000. She worked with young people who wanted to be musicians. In her 40s, the DJ wanted to connect with younger people, so he asked her to work with him.
There were a lot of British R&B groups when Tamara first met Westwood. He was in his 30s and the “No. 1 hip-hop DJ at that time,” she says.
Because when he asked her to “hang out,” she thought it was about her job. ‘He could make or break your job,’ says the woman. To get any attention at all you would try to get your demo played by him and pray that he did. He was in charge of everything.
They also talked to four other women who say that Westwood tried to touch them when they took a picture with him.
In the summer, Claire*, who was 20 at the time, went to a nightclub in Ayia Napa. The DJ had been playing, and she says she waited in line to take a picture with him after his set. Then, as her friend was taking the picture, she says Westwood said, “Let’s go get some ass,” and put his hand down the back of her jeans.

Loretta says that when Westwood is said to have groped her in a nightclub in Essex, she was a teenager. A picture was provided by the BBC.

New Year’s Eve in 2017 was the first time Nyla* met Westwood. He was 59 and DJing at a New Year’s Eve party in London at the time.
When he asked her on stage, he used the microphone to call her “the pengest girl in the rave.”
