Chinmayi Controversy: Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Tamil Poet Vairamuthu!

Chinmayi Sripaada: After receiving many complaints from women alleging sexual harassment, Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu has decided to return the ONV literary prize he was awarded. In honour of the late Malayalam poet and Jnanpith laureate O.N.V. Kurup, Vairamuthu has been selected to receive this award in his honour.

In reality, Vairamuthu was just declining the award, despite his claim that he was “returning” it. He branded the ONV Cultural Academy’s decision to reevaluate his candidacy for the award “vendetta” and claimed he did not want the jury to be embarrassed.

Chinmayi Controversy

The Academy announced on Friday that it will reconsider awarding Vairamuthu the fifth annual prize. Academy chairman and Malayalam film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan had previously defended the choice to award Vairamuthu, claiming the prize was for “excellence in writing and not After assessing a person’s character,” as reported by The News Minute.

Malayalam University VC Anil Vallathol, along with poets Alankode Leelakrishnan and Prabha Varma, chose Vairamuthu as the winner. Some of the women who accused Vairamuthu of sexual harassment, including the actors Parvathi Thiruvothu and Geetu Mohandas and the singer Chinmayi Sripada, have protested the lyricist receiving the Kerala honour.

According to what Thiruvothu had revealed, there were close to seventeen women who had accused Viaramuthu of sexual harassment and cruelty. All of the accusations against Vairamuthu have been dismissed by him as “false.”

Controversy also Erupted with New Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin

In a message on Twitter, Vairamuthu asked that the academy’s declared monetary reward of Rs three lakh be donated to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Public Relief fund and announced that he would be contributing Rs two lakh to the same as a “symbol” of his love for Kerala and its people. Social Media Statement On Chinmayi Sripada Controversy

Some online commenters have suggested that his statement is an attempt to repair his reputation. Poet Meena Kandasamy distinguished his actions from those of other Sahitya Akademi Award winners who returned their prizes to show their disapproval of the Central government.

On Twitter a year ago, Chinmayi Sripaada shared her #MeToo narrative in which she claimed that songwriter Vairamuthu had sexually harassed her. Exactly one year later, on November 7th, she opens up to The Quint in an exclusive interview on her thoughts on director Mani Ratnam casting Vairamuthu in his upcoming project.

In the meantime, Mani Ratnam is hard at work on his next big project, a historical picture called Ponniyin Selvan based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s classic Tamil literary novel of the same name. When lyricist Vairamuthu said in an interview that he would be writing songs for Mani Ratnam with music created by A R Rahman, the director found himself in the middle of a firestorm.
