The Social Credit System is an initiative for developing a system of rating each other in online communities in order to build trust through reputation. In other words, building an online reputation system.
Started by the Chinese government, it is directed to rate the citizens of the respective country on the basis of their social life, bank account status, the frequency of bill payments and so on.
Which in turn, will affect or perhaps determine, their eligibility for a number of affairs. The kind of jobs they will get and the ease of obtaining loans, to name a few.
WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE BEHIND THE SOCIAL CREDIT SYSTEM?
The goal of the initiative is “raising the awareness for integrity and the level of credibility within society.”
The system will be granted a “credit score” to every individual, based on the structured criteria.
The higher the score, the better will be the facilities and opportunities provided to you. Likewise, the better the citizen, higher will be the score with lesser restrictions. (Also read about what is social engineering)
Now you might be thinking how the criteria or standards will be allocated? For example, in terms of social behavior, if you donate blood frequently, or maintain a good relationship with your parents, you might acquire additional points!
By the same token, the drawbacks on maintaining a low score will lead to restrictions on employment opportunities, difficulty in acquiring credit, travel and so on. Correspondingly, to punish the unscrupulous people of the society.
Yes! That’s how it’ll work. All you need to be is a good citizen!
WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES: THE ADVANTAGES AND THE ILL EFFECTS
The implementation of the social credit system will, however, induce social anxiety among people. They will become more conscious of their behavior as they will know that all their actions are being recorded and publicized.
Furthermore, naming and shaming people through the publication of the names, photos, state ID numbers, and addresses of blacklisted persons is a fundamental part of the system.
This would definitely induce fear and a sense of agitation among the citizens. For now, they will be accountable for each and every action of theirs!
The Chinese government is planning to implement the structure by 2020.
