The Nuclear Submarine

INS Arihant : The indigenous INS Arihant India’s first nuclear powered submarine successfully completed its first deterrence patrol. The Name Arihant derives from two words -Ari meaning enemy and Hanth meaning destroy.

The ship submersible ballistic, nuclear(SSBN) submarine is a part of Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command.

The second SSBN under the project,INS Aridhaman, is undergoing sea trials.

Country’s first nuclear missile submarine has passed several deep sea diving drills well as weapons launch tests over the past several months under extreme secrecy. The vessel ahs have gone undergone deep sea dives off Vishakhapatnam where it was built.

The vessel has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Submarine Design Bureau and developed by the Indian Navy,Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO).

India has now joined a select group of countries namely US,Russia,China,France and the UK) which builds and operates Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear(SSBN).

India joins exclusive nuclear missile club

The success of INS Arihant gives a fitting response to those who involve in nuclear blackmail,as said by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

INS Arihant

The 6,000-tonne INS Arihant, under development for three decades under a highly classified programme, comes under the direct control of Nuclear Command Authority headed by PM Modi. Having successfully controlled the “deterrence patrol” , the INS Arihant can now be considered a fully functional underwater ballistic missile delivery platform.

At present, the only nuclear powered platform ins service with the Indian Navy is the IND Chakra , an Akula class SSN on lease from Russia.

A nuclear triad means that the country has now the capability of firing nuclear weapons from land ,air and sea.

This three-pronged capability is crucial for India’s declared no-first use of policy for nuclear weapons.Under this policy, India will never attack any country with nuclear weapons.

PM Modi hails the Crew

PM Modi received the crew of Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine(SSBN) INS Arihant, which recently returned from its first deterrence patrol, completing the establishment of the country’s survivable nuclear triad.

Congratulating the crew and all involved in the achievement which puts India among a handful of countries having the capability to design, construct and operate SSBNs, he stressed the significance of the successful deployment of INS Arihant fro the completion of India’s nuclear triad.
