Raipur has set an example for other cities to follow. In a remarkable initiative, the city is all set to launch 50 hut sheds for its elderly people to fight Loneliness. These hut sheds, known as Bapu ki Kutiya, will provide a common ground for the elderly, where they can come and interact with each other. The idea is to bring about a change in the environment that the elderly are living in, by increasing interactions with them and engaging them in various kinds of activities.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, Raman Singh, inaugurated the first Bapu ki Kutiya on January 27, 2018.

A FIGHT AGAINST LONELINESS
- The plan to construct ‘Bapu ki kutiya’ was initiated under the Raipur Smart City Limited. It has been constructed by the Raipur District Administration with a construction cost of around 15 Lakh.
- The hut sheds will be set up in gardens and other public spaces.
- With an accommodation of 30- 35 people, each hut shed will be facilitated with tables, chairs, coolers, television and radio sets. Games like carom and chess will be arranged for in the hut sheds. Furthermore, it will also provide newspapers and journals to read.
The initial funding has been provided by the authorities, however, further maintenance of the hut sheds will be taken care by the self-service organisations and social groups.
Raipur collector OP Chaudhary said, “We have invited social groups and organisations which work or are willing to work for the welfare of the elderly persons, for the maintenance of these huts.”
He further added, “We will only be funding the construction of the structure and initial facilities. Later it will be looked after by social organisations.”
A will to help the elderly fight loneliness and bring about a change is the need of the hour. Therefore, social service organisations have come forward to extend their support.
Rajat Bansal, Raipur Smart City Limited Managing Director said, “The maintenance was the biggest issue. Therefore, a condition was put forth that the hut shed will only be sanctioned as per the demand made by social organisations after they give an assurance to fully maintain it.”
