In a bid to revamp Mumbai Local Trains, the Central Railway (CR) has come up with various reforms that will ensure tighter security and better facilities for the commuters.
CENTRAL RAILWAY’S PLANS FOR THE MUMBAI LOCAL TRAINS
5. By the end of this year, the Central Railway (CR) plans to install 11,160 cameras with facial recognition capabilities. Each coach of the local train will have 6 such cameras. The step has been taken to ensure that no male commuter illegally forces his way through the coach that has been reserved for women. The cameras will store the facial details of the offender, who can then be tracked in his next trip. The 276 crore project has received budgetary sanctions.
S.K. Jain, Divisional Regional Manager (CR) said, “If the movement of the accused was not registered in the cameras installed at the stations, nabbing him would become difficult. With better face recognition technology in cameras, arrests would become easier.”
He further added, “We have asked for a certain set of requirements in the cameras to be procured. Face recognition and analytics must remain the key features of these cameras. After the cameras recognise a face, the technology will be able to trace the movement of that commuter in the past ten days. We plan to catch habitual offenders.”
4. In another modification, all women’s coaches will be equipped with talk-back devices. This system will provide women the facility to talk with the guard of the train. Moreover, these devices will be extremely helpful for women in case of urgency. The Central Railway (CR) intends to fit 1,106 such devices
3. A plan to install 52 escalators on various Stations by March this year is also under consideration.
Mr. Jain said. “We also plan to install at least one pair of escalators (upward and downward directions) in each suburban railway station by the end of the year.
2. Additionally, the Central Railway (CR) plans to construct 25 foot over bridges by the end of this year. Moreover, it also aims to raise all platforms by the end of the year and fit LED lights on railway stations and offices in the suburban areas.
