The Lok Sabha on Thursday after five-hour debate passed the reworked bill to make triple talaq a punishable offence. Although the a large margin of 245-11 votes passed the bill, yet the bill faced a walkout by the Congress and the AIADMK.
The real test, though, will be in Rajya Sabha, as the government lacks majority there. The government’s argument failed to convince most opposition parties, including Naveen Patnaik’s BJD and the AIADMK. The parties wanted the revised bill to go to a select committee of the two houses of parliament.
The opposition questioned the three-year-jail term for the husband, arguing that in no other religion there is such a punishment for desertion. There was also no clarity on who would provide maintenance to the wife once the husband is in jail.
Countering the Opposition, the government said the Triple Talaq Bill is to empower women, and is not against any faith.
The Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the Opposition should not “weigh the Bill on scales of politics”.
