This Is The Review of A Suitable Boy
A Suitable Boy (BBC One) has a lot at stake, which is typical of pioneering and long-overdue series like this. After more than half a century of horse-and-carriage historical dramas, this is the BBC’s first-period drama to include an all-South Asian ensemble and no white characters.
There isn’t a single cantankerous lady guarding her riches on her deathbed, not one of them. As a result, this six-episode distillation of Vikram Seth’s 1,300-page panorama of post-partition India has to do everything at once, over several areas, in order to succeed.
After all, some people were already dissatisfied with the features of this film adaptation before its opening titles even started. Whether or not A Suitable Boy is a success is up for debate. Is it possible to accomplish anything on such a high bar?
Mira Nair and Andrew Davies’ conventional adaptation, shot on location in northern India, opens with the line, “When India became independent in 1947, it was partitioned into two countries.” However, “the land and people of India were forever split,” he said.
That has never been more true – or more apt – than right now. When my dad first started reading The Barchester Chronicles, my Indian family devoured the genre. The great historical drama captures the spirit of its era. Accordingly, A Suitable Boy reflects the era in which it was written. But I’ll get to that in a moment.
