While Ellen “Nelly” Ternan (Felicity Jones) is playing at London’s Haymarket Theatre in 1857[Note 1], forty-five-year-old Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) notices her. Later, he casts her in a performance of Wilkie Collins’s The Frozen Deep at Dickens’ Free Trade Hall in Manchester,

together with her mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) and sister Maria (Perdita Weeks). After the performance, the famous author and the actress have a private moment together at a post-performance reception.

Nelly and her family go to see a reading of Dickens’ work at the Harrow Speech Room in London sometime later. Dickens is overjoyed to see Nelly again when the party is over. Soon after, Dickens began to spend more time with the Ternan family, taking them to Doncaster Racecourse.

Being frustrated by his wife’s unwillingness to share his enthusiasm for books and ideas, Charles dickens values the time he spends with the young actress he meets at a literary event. Nelly, for her part, relishes the opportunity to spend time with the renowned author.

Dickens walks from his country residence, Gads Hill Place, to East London early in the morning to see Nelly act in a play. To her mother’s delight, he is invited back to their cottage. Mrs. Ternan later tells Dickens that she can’t risk jeopardizing her daughter’s reputation by comparing him to her father.

Dickens assures her that he will not jeopardize her reputation in any way. Dickens invites the Ternan family to his townhouse after organizing a reading and fundraising for London’s “fallen women” and their children,

where Nelly is fascinated by the author’s books, manuscripts, and writing instruments. When they’re alone, they reveal intimate facts about their pasts and present selves, deepening their bond.
