Luka Modric named as the Best Male Player at the FIFA Awards
Soon after the FIFA World Cup 2018, when Croatia defeated top teams to qualify to the finals, the football pundits had speculated that the Croatian Captain Luka Modric will win some prestigious award this year at the FIFA Awards. The 33-year-old Modric won the Champions League for the third time in a row with his club, Real Madrid. He is the first player other than Ronaldo or Messi to win the Fifa award since Kaká in 2007. The Real Madrid midfielder, 33, beat former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, now with Juventus, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to the award.
Best Fifa men’s player – Luka Modric
Modric made 56 appearances for club and country. He won the Champions League three times in a row and reached the World Cup final. Croatia reached finals beating England in the semi-final – in what he admitted before the ceremony was his “best season ever”. Luka Modric ended Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s dominance of the best individual accolades in world football, which had stretched back to 2007, when Kaka won the Ballon d’Or.
Luka Modric secured 1st position with 29.05% votes. Cristiano Ronaldo got 19.08% votes for 2nd position. M.Salah of Egypt could secure only 11.23% for his 3rd place.
After receiving the award, Modric said he was “honoured” and thankful to all the coaches he has worked with for getting him to this stage. “This trophy is not just mine, it’s for all my Real Madrid team-mates, for all my team-mates from the Croatia national team, for all the coaches that I have played for,” he added. “Without them this would not be possible and thank you a lot to them. This trophy is also for my family, without whom I would not be the player and person that I am.”
