Early life

In April of 1959, Velumani was born to a landless farmer in the little village of Appanaickenpatti Pudur, which is located in the Coimbatore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. His parents were also farmers, but his mother supplemented the family’s income by raising buffaloes and selling their milk.

Before leaving her employment at the State Bank of India to create Thyrocare, Sumathi had been a banker. During Velumani’s time at BARC, he and his wife had two children, a son named Anand (born in 1989) and a girl named Amruta (born in 1991).
