Early life

In April of 1959, Velumani was born to a landless farmer in the little village of Appanaickenpatti Pudur, which is located in the Coimbatore district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. His parents were also farmers, but his mother supplemented the family’s income by raising buffaloes and selling their milk.

The business closed its doors after three years. After that, he spent 14 years as a lab assistant at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

During this time, he became an accomplished scientist after earning his Master’s and Doctorate degrees. After that, he was sent to the Radiation Medicine Centre (RMC) at Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, Maharashtra, which is part of the BARC. Velumani founded Thyrocare, a thyroid diagnostic lab, in 1996.

Since he wanted to make diagnostic testing accessible and affordable, he adopted a franchise model for his lab. Medical checks and other diagnostic blood tests were added to Thyrocare’s original focus on testing for thyroid issues. Velumani married Sumathi, daughter of J. K. Rao and Sarak Rao, at age 27 while working at BARC. Before leaving her employment at the State Bank of India to create Thyrocare, Sumathi had been a banker. During Velumani’s time at BARC, he and his wife had two children, a son named Anand (born in 1989) and a girl named Amruta (born in 1991).
