Controversies

Incident on Indi Go Flight: During a flight on IndiGo on January 28, 2020, Kamra challenged news anchor Arnab Goswami to a debate. Goswami’s portrayal of national politics and the suicide of Rohith Vemula were both topics that Kamra had questioned. A 1.51-minute video of the event posted by Kamra on Twitter depicted a stone-faced Goswami in response to the former’s questions.

The following day, Indigo announced a six-month ban on Kamra flying with the company. On the same day, he was permanently prohibited from flying with Air India, a government-owned airline. Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s minister of civil aviation, stated that other airlines should also ban Kamra to set a good example. The following day, he was permanently banned from both SpiceJet and GoAir.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued a statement saying that the suspension was unreasonable and against their guidelines. In response to IndiGo’s ban on Kamra, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap canceled his flight with the airline, and two passengers protested on a flight by holding up pro-Kamara signs.

Kamra protested the travel prohibition by filing a court complaint against IndiGo, seeking 25 lakh (about $31,000). After the cancellation of his comedy concerts in Gurgaon on September 11, 2022, Kamra issued an open letter to the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). He dared the VHP to denounce Nathuram Godse, the killer of Mahatma Gandhi.

Accusations of Contempt of Court: Kamra tweeted several times attacking the Supreme Court after Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was released on interim bail on 11 November 2020. Kamra was sued by eight individuals who accused him of disobeying the court. K. K. Venugopal, the state’s attorney general, issued his required assent to begin contempt proceedings in light of the tweets.

Kamra claimed he does not intend to retract the tweets or apologize for them because he still believes “the silence of the Supreme Court of India on problems of other’s personal liberty cannot go uncriticised.” He pleaded for the court’s attention to be diverted from his contempt case to other, more pressing matters.
