When Mystikal went to check on her sister Michelle in 1994, she found her dead on the floor of their home. Michelle had been stabbed and strangled.

When Mystikal admitted to sexually assaulting his hairstylist in 2003, he received a six-year sentence. He claimed she had taken $80,000 in checks, and then he and his two bodyguards had oral sex with her. At first, Mystikal maintained that the contact was voluntary, but soon after the allegations surfaced, a recording of the alleged assault was discovered at his home.

While in state prison on sexual assault and extortion charges in 2005, Mystikal was hit with two federal misdemeanor counts for failing to file tax returns for 1998 and 1999. In federal court the next year, he was found guilty of the tax charges, but he was allowed to serve his one-year federal sentence concurrently with his six-year state sentence.

After his discharge in 2010, he was labeled a sex offender. In 2012, after another dispute with his girlfriend, police detained Mystikal for the second time. After nine days in jail, he was allowed to post bail and go free. When he violated the terms of his probation again, he was given a three-month prison sentence.
