Netflix Deal

After signing a development contract with Rhimes on August 14, 2017, Netflix committed to making all of her future shows available exclusively on the streaming service. In June of 2018, Netflix announced that the first project under the deal would be an adaptation of Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People.”

The deal is multi-year exclusive and comes after Netflix purchased the streaming rights to all past episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” in the United States. Anna Chlumsky (of “Veep”) will portray a journalist (perhaps based on Pressler) researching a German heiress (played by “Ozarkbrilliant “‘s Julia Garner) in Rhimes’ “Inventing Anna,” a 10-part series.

Laverne Cox of “Orange Is the New Black” and Katie Lowes of “Scandal” also make appearances. It was claimed that filming for “Inventing Anna” began in October 2019, therefore the production likely wrapped before the coronavirus epidemic halted filming and television production (and everything else).

Rhimes’s “Bridgerton” will premiere on Netflix in the year 2020. Rhimes and Julie Andrews are working together again on this project. It’s based on the novels by Julia Quinn, which are big sellers about the cutthroat world of London’s Regency society.

Shonda can’t listen to “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol without getting emotional. The episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” in which Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) passes away features this song. And that wasn’t an accident. The name of that episode (Season 11, Episode 21) is also the name of a song by The Fray.

Contracts and Earnings

Rhimes reportedly negotiated a $100 million, four-year agreement with Netflix in 2017. Shonda’s long tenure at ABC and the success of her show there have boosted her wealth. She is not paid a flat rate for all of the episodes she creates, which for Grey’s Anatomy alone totals over 317.

When her shows were syndicated or sold to streaming platforms, she received at least 10% of the proceeds in addition to the $10 million a year she received from ABC from 2015 to 2018. The sum works up to around $1 million each episode for Rhimes.
