Starting Career: School cricket

In a cricket competition between his high school and St. Xavier’s School, Fort, he and Sachin Tendulkar put up a record-setting 664 runs without losing a wicket. Kambli scored 349 runs before being pushed to declare by their coach Acharekar; he then went on to take six wickets for 37 runs in St. Xavier’s first innings.

Kambli hit a six off the first ball he faced in the Ranji Trophy. In 1991, he made his debut in One Day Internationals, and in 1992, he made his debut in Tests.
