Bradbury was born on August 23, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Swedish immigrant Esther (née Moberg) Bradbury (1888–1966) and English power and telephone lineman Leonard Spaulding Bradbury (1890–1957). The name Douglas was given to him in honour of the actor Douglas Fairbanks.
In Waukegan, Bradbury spent his early childhood and formative years surrounded by extended relatives. As a child, he was read short stories by an aunt.
