Early Life
Bradbury was born on August 23, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Swedish immigrant Esther (née Moberg) Bradbury (1888–1966) and English power and telephone lineman Leonard Spaulding Bradbury (1890–1957). The name Douglas was given to him in honour of the actor Douglas Fairbanks.
In Waukegan, Bradbury spent his early childhood and formative years surrounded by extended relatives. As a child, he was read short stories by an aunt. This period gave the author and his stories with a basis. In Bradbury’s fictional writings, Waukegan, Illinois in the 1920s becomes “Green Town, Illinois.”In 1938, Bradbury was a senior in high school.
1926–1927 and 1932–1933, while their father sought employment, the Bradbury family resided in Tucson, Arizona, before relocating to Waukegan each time.
Bradbury attended Amphi Junior High School and Roskruge Junior High School in Tucson. They eventually landed in Los Angeles in 1934, when Bradbury was 14 years old, when he was 14 years old. The family landed in Hollywood with only $40 (equivalent to $810 in 2021), which covered rent and food until his father found a job making wire at a cable company for $14 per week, allowing them to remain in the city.
At Los Angeles High School, Bradbury participated in the drama club. He roller-skated through Hollywood frequently in an attempt to meet celebrities. Ray Harryhausen, a pioneer in special effects, and George Burns, a radio legend, were among the innovative and accomplished individuals Bradbury encountered. At age 14, Bradbury sold George Burns a joke for broadcast on the Burns and Allen radio programme.
