Tulsi Gabbard, the congresswoman of Hawaii has announced she will run for president in 2020. She is an Iraq War veteran who made history in 2012 as the first Hindu in the US Congress.

The 37-year-old congresswoman was born in American Samoa. Her family moved to Hawaii when she was two. She is the first member of congress to be born in the US territory covering seven South Pacific islands.

Tulsi Gabbard has visited early primary and caucus states New Hampshire and Iowa in recent months. She is joining crowded Democratic field. However, Gabbard’s run would be controversial. In 2016, she gained controversy from fellow Democrats when she met with Donald Trump during his transition to president. Also, later she took a secret trip to Syria and met President Bashar Assad. Assad has been accused of war crimes and genocide.

Ms Gabbard told CNN in an interview, “There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision. There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I’m concerned about and that I want to help solve.”
