World Cup 2018 is perhaps the only edition in the history of the mega football event when the top contender for the trophy or once favourite before the commencement of the Wolrd cup have all seen some tragic fates at the midway of the tournament. Belgium crushing the World cup dream of the 5 times World Cup champion Brazil is a valid testament to it.
Belgium was considered as the underdogs, prior to the start of the World cup and here we see them decimating the all-time World cup favourites in thin air. Neck to neck competitions like these is truly a treat to the audience’s eyes.
Let’s have a look at the 3 key points from the game between Belgium and Brazil
Even the overhyped superstar of Brazilian football and the upcoming star of PSG couldn’t help Brazil from suffering a defeat at the hands of the once considered underdogs of the game.
Nemar Jr. was considered as the greatest contender in the race for the Golden Boot at the start of the tournament. Considered as one of the most successful teams in the history of the World Cup, Brazil’s exit at Quarterfinals is quite disheartening.
One would expect them to be at least at the finals or semifinals before making an exit if it is supposed to happen for them. Knocking out the favourites of the cup that too at crucial stages and ensuring a seat for yourself in the semifinals is indeed a really applaudable move.
Belgium attack had complete dominance over the game
Their attack consisting of Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Fellaini got the better of the Men in Yellow. Hazard was just way too brilliant with his skills on-field and was instrumental in oozing out the pressure from one end for Belgium, by taking control over the ball on most occasions.
Kevin Bruyne to chipped in from the other end by making the necessary passes and crosses, thereby ensuring the dominance of their team throughout the course of the game. Also, Lukaku’s approach of taking on the Brazilian defence with a startling offence worked in Belgium’s favour.
Brazil’s own goal acted as a blessing for Belgium
The decision of bringing in Fernandinho in place of Casemiro in the battle which was considered as a one-sided contest proved fatal for the 5 times champions.
Casemiro, the default midfielder for Brazilian unit, having picked up his 2nd yellow card of the World cup in the game against Mexico was nowhere in the selection list for Brazil’s game against Belgium.
That paved opportunity for Fernandinho to make an appearance in the World Cup 2018 which he probably would have prefered to skip out instead. Little did he knew about the consequences of his selection.
Instant Brazil suffered an own goal, credits to Fernandinho, things started to get completely out of the hand for the all-time favourites as they struggled to make an impact from that point of time itself.
Belgium made use of that opportunity and smacked another one down the net, to seal off the fate of the 5-time world cup champs from this edition of the World cup.
Brazil coach under the radar
No one would have anticipated such an outcome even in the worst situations. Brazil losing it out to Belgium? The 5-time champ against an underdog was considered as a one side contest from the start. Underestimating Belgium, making fatal replacements, proved highly disastrous for the Brazilian unit.
And, who was the man behind this disastrous decisions? Well, it is none other than the very own Tite. It is probably one of those moments that show the unpredictability of the game. Once considered favourites, lost their most crucial game to a team which hardly boasts of having a couple big of players!
Tite’s decisions haven’t met with appreciations from any. Though Brazil somehow managed to get past each stage and ensured a victory over another victory, yet his actions and tactics weren’t the best you’d expect from a coach.
His decision of bringing in Gabriel Jesus in place of Roberto Firmino, who’s probably having a terrific run with the ball, and Douglas Costa could be some of the reasons if he loses up his managerial role in future.
What followed, was a disaster of the highest order with no disaster containment strategy to opt in to. By the time Tite would have realised what was actually happening on the field, it was way too late to make any impressionable changes.
