The 21st edition of Common Wealth Games 2018 has just kicked off and guess what India has clinched two golds. But, what’s more interesting is that both the golds are won by women in the weightlifting section. Common Wealth Games, commonly called Gold Coast 2018 is currently held in Queensland, Australia on April 4, 2018.
On the first day after inauguration, Mirabai Chanu clinches the first gold for the country in weightlifting. It was indeed a record breaking show because she out threw her rival by standing 10 kg more. Yes, you read that right! She rose to the occasion on the first day and snatched the glory by lifting a whooping 189 kg. 85 kg in snatch and 104 kg in clean and jerk. The twitter probably went down for a while since the platform was overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with the tweets of congratulations.
Meanwhile, on day 2, Sanjita Chanu also bagged the gold in 53 kg women’s category in weightlifting. She was the medal account opener in the Glasgow Commonwealth in 2014 under 48 kg category. Since then, she has been practicing hard and her hard work paid off. Manipuri Star as they call her beat her rival by more than 10 kg. She lifted a total of 192 kg to which her fellow weight lifter Loka Dika Toua failed.
India has till now managed to bag 3 medals (2 gold, 1 silver). All in the weightlifting events where Gururaja had to satisfy for the silver. The wins have indeed increased our hunger for more. And we are sure to get a good tally of medals.
Taking this into account, we have selected some of the finest of them that we are looking forward to. the list is not exhaustive and there are so many young talents sprouting up. We indeed cherish them because their victory is not limited to them, but for the country.
1. Annu Rani
Probably, you haven’t heard of her or may be you did. But Annu Rani became the first Indian women javelin thrower to qualify for world championships. She broke the national record of 58.46 m, previously held by Gurmeet Kaur. She stood eighth in 2014 Common wealth Games but the hunger of making her name pushed her. Winning Bronze in the Asian games partly fulfilled her dream yet there is a long way to go for this girl. So, better watch out!! Have a keen eye on her as the javelin may help India climb up meter by meter.
2. Heena Sidhu
Looks could kill. But, here looks as well as the lady can kill. Eyes like a hawk and pistol in her hands. Indeed she can hit the bull’s eye every now and then. In the air pistol event, Heena Sidhu is the name or the identification of Indian Contingency. Her career so far has been outstanding. Furthermore, she came into light when she bagged gold in 2010 Common Wealth Games alongside Annu Raj Singh in 10m air pistol. Currently, she hold the record of 203.8 score and is ranked #1 in world rankings by International shooting sports federation.
3. Sakshi Malik
The name still afresh in the minds of many. Sakshi Malik, freestyle wrestler has been keeping the hopes high for the countrymen as she is a brilliant prospect in the 62 kg category of the wrestling event. A plethora of medals under her belt is the reason that we can rely on her to beat or actually thrash her rivals. The most memorable being her bronze medal at 2016 Summer Olympics. Other than that she won silver in 2014 CWG and bronze in 2015 Asian Games.
4. Joshna Chinnappa
A pretty uncommon yet very effective name in the list. This 31 year old lady had left her footprint in the 2014 Common Wealth Games. She clinched gold while playing alongside Dipika Pallikal Karthik, making it first ever medal in the sport. And what a treat, a Gold medal. Today, she has advanced into the quarter-finals of the sport though the compatriots have been thrashed out. She is keeping the flame of hope still alive in Gold Coast 2018. Surely, an inspiration to women to welcome new sports.
5. P.V Sindhu
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri honored P.V Sindhu’s name may be at the last of the list but surely not the least. The woman who gave a tough match to Carolina Marin in the finals of Rio olympics Badminton event. The leader of the Indian contingent in the opening ceremony says it all that we have full faith in her abilities. In addition to her 2016 Rio Olympics performance, she has silver and bronze medal streaks in the world championships and Asian games. But, can she convert to gold this time? We can hope for though.
As already mentioned the list is not exhaustive. India has sent its most finest athletes to compete against the best of the world. But, surely there are many medal prospects in the convoy of 225 athletes and we are hoping for some great medal bagging events. Pressure is very high as expectations are high yet we believe that everyone would be amazed to watch the aforementioned women and applaud them for their effort.
