With Smith , Warner and Bancroft now facing their respective bans, Darrenn Lehmann, their head coach has decided to step down as well. Darrenn Lehmann would quit after their fourth and final test against South Africa in the ongoing series. His decision has left the Australian side in complete hiatus.
Darrenn Lehmann was quoted saying “Despite telling media yesterday that I’m not resigning , after reviewing Steve and Cameron’s hurting it’s only fair that I make this decision. ”
Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland had given Lehmann a clean chit, stating that Lehmann had no role to play in the sandpaper gate scandal. Even Darrenn Lehmann was completely unaware of Smith and Warner’s decision of going for the ball tampering .
When the controversy surrounding Smith and Warner’s suspension had surfaced, Darrenn Lehmann had assured Cricket Australia of his continual as the Head Coach for the team.
In the aftermath of the ball tampering scandal he was quoted saying “As many who sit in this room will know , life on the road means a lot of time away from loved ones and after speaking to my family , it is the right time to step away , ” he said today
He also said ” I hope the team rebuilds and the Australian Public can forgive the young men and get behind the XI .”
Darrenn Lehmann was full of tears when he disclosed his decision of stepping down from Australia’s head coach position. He wasn’t under any pressure from the Cricket Australia authorities to give up his role of head coach.
The fourth and final test against South Africa would be the last time he would don the coach’s role. Darrenn Lehman was signed as a head coach till Ashes 2019 , which is to be held in England.
The sandpaper gate incident completely tarnished Cricket Australia’s image in front of the cricketing world. The players and their families had to face lot of flak for the ball tampering actions.
When lehmann was appointed as the head coach in 2013 , Australian team was going through some rough patch , back in 2013. It is when Lehmann was appointed as their head coach , someone who could save the Australian Cricket from sulking further.
Lehmann was brought in as a replacement to Mickey Arthur. Lehmann, was supposed to bring in more discipline, consistency and accountability in the players performances.

“Win, Win , Win , for a start ” said Lehmann when he was asked about his top 3 priorities being the Head Coach. Though under his tenure they had a bumpy start, with Aussies losing the Ashes in 2013 , they eventually went on to seal a whitewash back in Australia in the ashes 2013-14.
As a coach , his stats seem pretty decent as he has won 30 tests , drew 8 and lost 19 .Not to forget the Australia team winning the World Cup back at home in 2015.
They lost the urn on their tour to England in 2015 , but successfully snatched it back with a 4-0 series victory at home in the Ashes 2017-18 . Also, the team had managed to reach the Number 1 spot many times in different formats of the game under his tenure as the head coach.
“My Family and I have copped a lot of abuse over the last week and it’s taken its toll , ” said Lehmann . He also mentioned ,that being the Head Coach, he was responsible for maintaining the culture of the team .
Darenn Lehmann says that his act of stepping down as the Head Coach might help the Cricket Australia in regaining the public trust. Darrenn was quoted saying ” Saying goodbye to the players was the toughest thing I have ever had to do. ”
Looks like the sandpaper gate scandal really has given the Cricket Australia some mighty blows. It would be difficult for any person to fill in the void created by the absence of Smith, Warner and Lehmann. Hopefully Cricket Australia finds a solution to their problem and bounces back in full strength.
