Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has laid emphasis on Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin’s selection in the upcoming test matches against England.
A lot has been said about the English pitches following the recently concluded 3-match ODI series. Cricket fanatics and former cricketers feel that there’s a strong chance for the England pitches to turn dry during the upcoming games between the hosts and the visitors.
There hasn’t been any form of confirmation on it, yet there’s a probability that if the pitches that were deployed in the ODI games are emulated in the Test series, then India could gain a considerable advantage over the English unit.
Sachin Tendulkar and now Mohammed Azharuddin too feel the need to include quality spinners onto the Indian unit for the 5-match contests.
Azharuddin speaks on the dominance India could exhibit in the series
Azharuddin, who was in the 1986 Indian unit to have defeated England in their own backyard, feels that the present England team would find it difficult to play again the Indian attack.
“England will find it difficult to dislodge India because they don’t have a good bowling attack. We have a very strong side. There are only two bowlers that they have ( Broad and Anderson) but they are injury prone and in the twilight of their careers,” said Azharuddin during an interview with PTI officials.
The former Indian skipper feels that Kuldeep’s inclusion could pose as a major threat for the English team, but, it also depends on the wickets being prepared for the contest and it would solely determine the player combinations.
“If it’s a green pitch then they may go with 4-1, but I think 3-2 will be a better combination if you want to win. Because later the pitches will get dry. It will be hot and the itches would offer turn especially on the last two days,” said the 55-year-old cricketer.
He further added,” The only chance England will have is if they give green tops, but if they give green tops they will also struggle because we also have very good swing bowlers.”
Ashwin and Kuldeep to surely make the cut
The veteran who captained the Indian unit for 47 tests was in full praise for Kuldeep Yadav, following his mind-boggling performances in the concluded ODI and T20i series. But, he also mentioned, if India went for a 4-1 combination, then Ashwin would be their default option solely on the basis of his experience.
“He is performing so he should be picked and the England side is struggling against him. Ashwin and Yadav should play. I don’t think Jadeja will make the cut,” said Azharuddin.
Azharuddin on the Yo-Yo Test debacle
The former skipper feels that the Yo-Yo Test is perhaps the best method to measure a player’s fitness standards.
“It should be conducted before the team is selected not after. And the present Indian team is the fittest to have ever played the game.”
