Even in the wildest dreams, no one would have anticipated that the English unit would create history by landing into the semifinals for the first time in the World cup. Football fraternity would surely remember the England vs Sweden duel for the years to come.

Not everytime you get to witness such epic encounters. What they’ve achieved, is by no means a cup of tea. Not many teams have the potential in them to exhibit such exemplary performance.
Really, for England to have somehow managed to pull a Houdini act, that too in the race for the semi-final against a team which boasts of defeating some really strong contenders, isn’t less than an unimaginable feat, considering the English unit were the underdogs from the beginning.
It might have been a real shocker for the Sweden fans who had so many anticipations with their team. They had plans for a sure shot victory in this deciding duel, which, unfortunately, got backfired to some extent.
Match winners for England
The credit for England’s success goes to Dele Alli and Harry Maguire for exhibiting some out of the box football prowess in the form of nicely sculpted headers, which ensured the team’s success in the must-win contest.
Also, one can’t deny the contributions of Raheem Sterling, England’s forward who, in spite of not scoring a goal, ensured proper passes and crosses throughout the 90 minutes and completely eclipsed the Swedish defences.
The 1966 Football champions, last reached semifinals, way back in 1990 and since then was failing as a unit failing to make any major dent in the FIFA tournaments. A victory in the battle between England vs Sweden was just what they needed to wipe out the tag of a weakling that got associated with them from the start of the World cup.
Swedish team’s efforts went in vain
The victory was by no means by the order of luck or by pitiful play from the Swedish end. One should have seen the level of passes and crosses that the English side exhibited. Mindboggling- this would be the one word that aptly describes their standard of play in tonights’ game in Samara Arena.
On our way, on our way to Moscow was the only chant that got echoed throughout the stadium. Obviously not by the Swedish fans, but cent per cent by the English fans who had flown all the way down to Putin’s land for the FIFA tournament.
No one had expected them to rise to such levels. You would not have found one person who might have predicted England’s victory in this top-notch duel. And, throughout the world cup, the English side had been receiving flak from the football fraternity for having exhibited extremely poor tactical skills, was ridiculed for having won their 2 games against puny nations -Panama and Tunisia. But, all that hardly matters anymore. A win is all that counts in the end.
