England team is going through a horrific run in the limited overs cricket. They didn’t lose to a team called India, instead, they lost to a man named Kuldeep, on not just one, but two crucial occasions which helped the Virat Kohli led Indian unit to draw first blood in India vs England ODI series. So, has England cricket team hit rock bottom? Certainly No.
Considering, it was last month when they notched up a mammoth world record of 481 at the loss of 6 wickets, courtesy the rampage unleashed by Ales Hales, Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan. They can still fancy their chance for a series win from the 2nd game onwards. But, prior to the 2nd battle, they must address these 3 issues by hook, or by crook, else a series loss would surely be on cards.
3 issues that England would have to resolve before 2nd India vs England ODI game
Joe Root where are you?
The swashbuckling England batsman has not been in the best form in this ongoing series, international arena to say the best. In his previous 10 innings in the white ball cricket, he has managed to get past the 30 run mark in only two occasions.
Once considered as a potential number 3 batsman, the team’s reliance on Joe Root has diminished significantly in the past couple of months.
Having said that, the inclusion of Bairstow at the top order, Alex Hales at number 3 position and Buttler as their hard-hitting opener, will only make it worse for Joe Root in coming circumstances.
Though it doesn’t mean that Root will be dropped from the ODI unit, still, he would have to fight for his survival by delivering some mouth-shutting performances in the ongoing series.
He has been such a prolific run-getter for the English unit in the past couple of years, and for a player of his calibre to lose it out against the likes of Indian bowling unit is completely unacceptable.
Where’s the deadly Stokes?
Considered as the Bad Boy of England cricket, Ben Stokes is yet to deliver his best in this series. His back to back failures as an all-rounder has raised many eyebrows over his prowess in the game.
Making a comeback to the squad following a hamstring injury must have been really hard for the 27-year-old English all-rounder, as was visible in the recently concluded T20 contests.
He has been a champion player for the England team in both shorter and longer formats of the game, and at this juncture, England would need his services all the more, to prevent a crushing defeat at the hands of the visitors.
By hook or by crook, Stokes must have to elevate himself from the pit of failures he has put himself into. It would be a do or die situation for the England cricket team in the 2nd ODI contest, and Stokes is the only player who could give an edge to the home team.
Be more aggressive against Kuldeep!
The 23-year-old left arm chinaman has turned out to be a disaster for the English team. He has single-handedly won games for the visiting team on 2 crucial occasions, coincidentally, both being the opening games of the respective series.
What’s astonishing, is to see such destructive players of the game bowing down to his spin finesse. They looked to have found his weakness, after losing out to him in the 1st T20 game. Alex Hales, backed by the destruction Jonny Bairstow himself had managed to get the better of him in the 2nd T20 game, which forced his exit for the 3rd contest.
Yet, it looks like Kuldeep’s nightmare has struck them again. With Dhoni behind the stumps, and wicket spinning square, the Indian unit has formed a lethal weapon out of Kuldeep.
England team would have to deploy the necessary tactics against the Indian spinner if they want a survival till the 3rd and final contest of India vs England ODI game.
