Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan feels that Team India has sufficient firepower under their belt, and they could dominate the Englishmen without any hustle and bustle in the 5 match test series which would be played between them.
India’s loss by 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series against England brought in criticisms regarding the Indian unit’s style of play, especially when they were leading the 3 match contests by a 1-0 margin. The defeat was really a shock for all the Indian fans.
What further added to their woes, were the injuries of some of their key players, whose absence would only deteriorate team India’ condition in the tests.
Zaheer Khan on the absence of Key Players
When Zaheer Khan was asked whether Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar’s absence will have any effect on Team India’s performance in the upcoming contests, he straight away mentioned the bench strength that India possesses, and it would be just the right moment to put them for use.
Indian selectors have included the names of Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Ishant Sharma and Bumrah in their squad for the first 3 contests. Not to forget, the presence of Hardik Pandya as an all-rounder could also prove as a match-turning inclusion.
BCCI officials have recently informed that Jasprit Bumrah would be fit for selection, from 2nd test. The first test would be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 1st August.
“Bumrah is injured for the first few matches and there has been an injury concern to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, which is a concern seeing the forthcoming season, but I believe even after their injuries, the five-match tournament is a long series,” said the 39-year-old pacer.
He further added,” I believe whichever bowlers will play like Umesh is doing well, Ishant is a senior bowler and has to take more lead and Mohammed Shami has a good record- I believe Bhuvi and Bumrah’s absence will be felt, but still India’s bench strength is very strong.”
The World Cup Champion also showed his consent with Sachin’s views on the Indian Bowling unit.
“Yes absolutely, if you see the style, with the style of each bowler, you can say it is an accomplished attack because, in different conditions, different bowlers impress more.”
Team’s fitness of utmost importance
Zaheer Khan feels that the present team is perhaps the most complete Indian unit and if they are able to emulate consistent cricket then they will surely pass the 5-match tests without breaking a sweat.
“I feel that it will be an Indian summer, seeing the conditions, and I wish the Indian team will play the 5-test series with the consistency with which they are doing good,” said the Indian pacer who has 311 test scalps to his name.
He further went on to say,” The 5 match rubber is a long series and I hope that all our bowlers will remain fit and the entire squad is fit. Because in a long series it is necessary they stay together as a team.”
“Your tough and good days will come. The more you enjoy the tour and the local flavors, it will be beneficial,” said Zaheer Khan in the conclusion.
