Indian skipper Virat Kohli has shown interest in selecting the duo of Kul-Cha( Kuldeep and Chahal) in the 5 match test series against England. The spin duo’s recent performances have won them accolades from many cricketing legends. Especially, Kuldeep’s game has been one hell of a ripper for the Indian unit, as they managed to clinch the T20i series in the English conditions, and would be eyeing for ODI and Test wins as well.
Kohli speaks on Chahal and Kuldeep’s chances of playing England test series
While Kuldeep has managed to play 2 tests for the Men in Blue, Chahal is yet to make a test debut. Kohli feels that the spin wizardry of the duo could be put to test in the upcoming test series. The skipper has mentioned that England’s struggle against Indian quality spinners should be exploited in tests as well.
“Anything is possible with the selections for tests and there might be a few surprises. Kuldeep is making a strong case for himself and so is Chahal. And looking at the way, the English batsmen have struggled against them, we might be tempted to do it,” said the 29-year-old Indian skipper after registering a swashbuckling victory over the England team.
But the focus is now on winning the next two games. Especially the next game, looking at it from the series perspective. The weather has been lovely. The crowd support has been brilliant. The tour is really long and there is some tough cricket ahead of us which we are looking forward to.”
Kohli was in full praise for the spin duo of Kuldeep and Chahal. He also mentioned how important their contribution has been in the games played at South Africa, and in the recent conditions.
“When it comes to the longer game, you need players to make an impact. These two wrist spinners have been making the difference since they have come in. They did it in South Africa in the middle overs. They remain as our key weapons,” said the Indian skipper.
Indian skipper in praise of Kuldeep’s ODI performance at Trent Bridge
Kuldeep has been quite sensational in the present tour of England. In the opening ODI contest against the hosts, he managed to notch up a career best figure of 25-6 in his 10 overs.
England team could be found struggling to play him out in the games to date. Though during the 2nd game, it looked like England has finally deciphered a way to bang him down the fence, but in vain. The left arm chinaman crushed the entire England unit in the ODI game at Trent Bridge and T20i at Manchester.
He has successfully managed to bag 18 wickets in total, of the 3 games played ( 2 T20i and 1 ODI), and is prancing towards the 50 wicket mark in the ODI cricket.
The 29-year-old all-time legend mentions never seeing such ODI numbers from any wrist spinner, that too in foreign conditions.
“Those wrist spinners in the middle overs are going to be tricky. Given more overs and more time in the middle, they become even more lethal. Kuldeep was outstanding. To give away 25 runs and pick up 6 wickets on that kind of wicket, I don’t think I have seen a better spell of bowling in ODIs of late,” said Kohli.
With Kuldeep and Chahal getting the needed support from their skipper, one can expect the duo to be in the playing XI for the upcoming 5 match test series as well. Though it would depend on the pitch conditions, weather and the English unit they would be playing against in the tests, still, a dominance in the longer formats could turn out to be possible for the Indian unit.
