MS Dhoni, the name’s enough to strike fear in the minds of bowlers, an all-time legend, one of the greatest to have ever played the game is, unfortunately, going through a rough patch in the middle.
Dhoni has been around with the team for 14 years now, and playing selflessly since his arrival to the Indian cricket. He is an exceptionally talented wicket-keeper, a hard-hitting batsman and above-all a skillful captain who knows the ins and outs of the game better than anyone else.
So what’s the problem?
MS Dhoni hasn’t been in the best shape lately and has turned into a subject of mass criticism. His performance in the past couple of years has deteriorated. Each passing series, one could witness his sulk to a greater extent than ever.
In the recently concluded ODI series against England, Dhoni exhibited what could be called as a pedestrial knock or an ultra-slow innings in the 2nd game of the 3 match series which is considered as one of the reasons for India’s loss against England.
And, it’s not about any particular game that MS Dhoni has been failing it, there has been a barrage of such instances where he could have changed the course of the contest, had he been more aggressive and open in the middle.
The intent, power, and aggression that he used to play with in his earlier days have vanished in thin air. There isn’t the fighting spirit anymore. He’s lost his silver touch.
Any probable solutions?
Make MS Dhoni bat at number 4
In the past couple of years, Team India has tried and tested more than 10 different players at the number 4 position. Unfortunately, none of could impress the audience and the BCCI officials.
Dhoni, batting at number 4 adds a certain degree of experience and strength to the middle It also allows him to settle with one top order batsman and if in case any wicket falls then, then he could be the one holding onto the innings from one end.
Can Dinesh Karthik bat at 4?
With DK’s present form, it wouldn’t be a mistake to make him bat at number 4 position. Since his performance in the Nidahas trophy finals, DK has become an overnight sensation in the eyes of the public.
He could be a wicketkeeper the team deserves, and under pressure situations, DK can be the finisher the team’s looking for in the past couple of years. It’s about time he is given some additional responsibilities.
What about young players?
Indian team has enormous potential under their belt. Though they might not as experienced as MS Dhoni, still, they could be given a try as it would only add to the team’s experience.
Sanju Samsun, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan or Shreyas Iyer could form a solid core to the Indian team. If given an opportunity, they might prove extremely helpful to the team on many occasions. Perhaps it’s the right time for Kohli to opt in for at least 1 youngster at the moment so that he is able to gain the necessary inputs of playing under tough situations.
With Dhoni’s present form, it would only be a matter of time for Virat and Co. to make a judgment on his inclusion. Till now, they’ve somehow managed to remain quiet on the Veteran’s sulking performance.
MS Dhoni would have to perform, or his expulsion from the team would surely be on cards.
