Rashid Khan is already the best T20 spinner in the world as per the cricketing pundits. At 19 , Rashid Khan has already garnered the praise and respect from the cricketing fans all across the world.
It is good to see talented players emerging from a country like Afghanistan . Cricket has certainly helped them by enhancing their reputation to quite an extent. Now, Afghanistan is a member of all the 3 formats of the game( ODI,Test,T20) .
Afghanistan has key players who have been instrumental behind their success at the international level. Mohammed Shahzad , Mohammed Nabi along with Rashid Khan form the core of the team. Rashid is the one who has caught everyone’s attention the most , that too at such an early age.
Rashid has played T20 competitions across the globe and with his present form, looks invincible. He has very brilliantly carved out a niche for himself .

Rashid Khan’s distinctive identity
Khan relies heavily on his ability to bowl googly which has helped him especially in the spinner friendly in India. His quick bowling action and backed by the ability to deliver googly made him an overnight sensation in previous IPL edition. Rashid took 17 wickets in just 14 matches with an economy of 6.68 .
In a tournament like IPL, where even the most lethal and best bowlers get thrashed across the stadium, Rashid was able to stay solid, dry up the run rates and choke the batsmen with his spells.
Rashid’s performance in Big Bash League was even better than IPL’s . He picked up 18 wickets in 11 matches with an economy of 5.66 , that too on seamer-friendly pitches ! Not someone to be taken lightly is what can be said about him.
Khan has been able to maintain his sublime form in ODIs as well. He has 96 scalps in 42 ODI matches with a economy of under 4. He certainly has the potential to be the best which is evident in his match winning performances.
There have been many instances where he has single handedly turned the course of the game for Afghanistan or Sunrisers Hyderabad or Adelaide Strikers.
Spin rivalries from players across the World
There are many leg spinners around the World who can challenge Rashid with their abilities and turn the tides in their favor in the course of the game. Yuzvendra Chahal , the Indian leg spinner is one serious contender to Rashid.
Chahal who played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore , showed his prowess in the recently concluded Nidahas trophy. He ended up as the joint highest wicket taker.
Along with Kuldeep Yadav, he displayed some mesmerizing spells in the tour of South Africa. They both were instrumental in tearing apart the South African batting lineup . Chahal had picked up 16 wickets in the 6 match ODI series against SA with a 5 wicket haul at Centurion.
Even Chahal’s IPL record looks pretty decent. Chahal has picked up more than 20 wickets in a season twice . He has also missed out on getting purple cap on 2 occasions – in 2015 and in 2016. So , there are strong chances for him to be this year’s contender for purple cap.
Kuldeep Yadav also had a terrific SA tour and ended up taking 17 wickets in 6 matches. Though Yadav’s ODI record is decent ,but his IPL records aren’t that good as Chahal’s.
If we look overseas, we may find Adam Zampa from Australia as a successful spin alternative. He had his share of success in the limited matches that he played in his 1st season in 2016. He has an economy of 7.54 , which is lesser as compared to Chahal or Yadav.
Zampa had a good season with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League . But he hasn’t been able to replicate his IPL or Big Bash performances at the international level. In the ODI Series against England , he fell prey to many batsmen and leaked runs at regular intervals .
Rashid Khan seems to be the best T20 leg spinner at the moment. If Rashid’s talent is properly nurtured, then it may surely take him to great heights in the years to come.
