RCB is probably one team who despite having some of the best players in the world, choke every season when it’s needed the most. The Bangalore franchise locked horns with Rajasthan Royals and suffered a pathetic defeat which led to their ouster from the tournament. RCB , led by Kohli failed to chase a target of 165 and got decimated at 134 with 4 balls to spare.
RR took a brave decision of batting first and letting RCB do the chase keeping in mind the present form of Kohli and Ab de Villiers. The phrase – Fortune favours the bold turned out to be true in Rajasthan Royal’s case .
let’s look at the 4 reasons that led to RCB’s fallout in the clash of royals
Over Dependence on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers
Another season ended with RCB relying heavily on the performances of run machine kohli and superman AB de Villiers. At the start of the season , it appeared as if RCB had just the right team for breaking it to the playoffs. But , like previous seasons , they once ended their campaign on a disastrous note.
Chasing 165 , Kohli got out cheaply and then the rest of the team fell like a pack of cards. Ab De Villiers turned out to be the only performer for their side with 53 runs in 35 balls.
Failed to judge Shreyas Gopal’s spin bowling
Gopal was not enjoying the best of the IPL till this game. He started the season by dismissing big names like Raina , Dhoni , Kohli and De Villiers. Somehow , the opposition batsmen realized his style of bowling and went for an all out attack on him.
His poor performances got him dropped from the team but it looked like destiny decided to give one last chance to Gowtham to prove his worth . He registered his career best in IPL against some of the best players of the game. Gowtham would probably remember his performances for quite a long time.
He took Patel’s wicket in the 2nd over , followed by Ali’s wicket by bowling a googly .Throughout his 4 overs, he tempted the batsmen to go for big hits and in the process ended up taking 4 wickets.
Krishnappa Gowtham’s all-round contributions
He proved his worth by putting up match winning performances against MI and CSK this season. Gowtham also went for some big hits which helped RR cruise to 164 .
No one would have anticipated that Gowtham could convert into a key player for their franchise at such an important stage of the game. With the ball, he conceded mere 2 runs in the first over and gave a fatal blow in the 2nd over by dismissing kohli and ending RCB’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs once again.
Rahul Tripathi’s unbeaten match winning knock
Rajasthan’s decision of promoting Rahul up the order proved to be a match winning one. Without Rahul’s contribution, RR wouldn’t have managed to reach even half of what the required total.
Presence of foreign players like Klaasen and D’Arcy Short pushed Rahul down the order. Later when Jos Buttler and Rahane started going in as openers , Rahul yet again struggled to contribute from the middle .
The departure of Jos Buttler came as a blessing in disguise for Rahul . He got an opportunity to open up the innings alongside skipper Ajinkya Rahane and the move struck the right chord. His unbeaten 80 has kept RR still in the hunt for a playoff’s seat.
