Delhi Daredevils led by Ricky Ponting as their head coach might not have qualified for the playoffs , but some of the players , especially the young talents shot to prominence with their continous stellar performances throughout the season . Ricky Ponting was found praising the team’s batting unit for giving the opposition unit a run for their money on many occasions.

The former Australian skipper managed to pick lot of positives from the team as a coach and lauded on the talent they possessed. He mentioned that the players aren’t to be blamed for not making it to playoffs this season .

Delhi Daredevils had a powerhouse of talent this season who took the mantle of making it big on quite a few occasions. The Delhi based franchise gave opportunities to many budding cricketers with Rishabh Pant, Avesh Khan, Shreyas Iyer  and Prithwi Shaw being few of them.

RIshabh Pant and Delhi Daredevils’s skipper Shreyas Iyer were constant performers for the season. Young Pant succeeded in getting heaps of praise from the Indian audience as well as from cricketing legends . His smacking set of performances led to his comparisons being made with the once destructive T20 legend Yuvraj Singh.

The left arm aggressive wicket keeper batsman ended on a high note by scoring 64of 44 balls on their final match against the Mumbai Indians. He single handedly crushed the defending champions and knocked them out of the tournament. His match winning innings consisted of 4-4s and 4-6s at a strike rate of 145.45.

While the head coach was immensely happy with Pant’s performance, he was equally satisfied with the ones exhibited by their skipper Shreyar Iyer. He was in full support for the skipper Shreyas Iyer who was forced push for the captaincy following Gambhir’s sudden decision of resigning as the captain.

Gambhir dropping himself from the team was a shock for everyone as no one would have anticipated that step to come from a player of his caliber . He was the man behind KKR’s IPL victories in the season 2012 and 2014.

Ricky ponting said ” It would be nice if he was able to retain that [Orange Cap] for the remaining games but as we know , Kane Williamson is breathing down his throat. It is a great recognition for the personal season that Risbhah had. ”

“Across the board we needed a more even contribution – from a few more of out top order batsmen if we were going to be a threat to challenge for the title this year. Shreyas had a really good season , probably over 400 runs , he can hold his head up high but we just didn’t get enough consistency from out batting group up to be up there with the leading teams in the tournament. ” said the head coach.

When asked about the 19 year old Prithwi Shaw , Ponting said ” Prithwi is a highly talented bloke , has got to work on his running between the wickets , but other than that , he is a pretty good young player.”

On a similar note the Australian legend mentioned, “If you look through some of the youngsters that we have played this year, you have to say some of the guys you have seen- Prithwi , Abhishek , Sandeep – you got to say they are some of the most exciting players that have taken part eve, Avesh Khan is another one .”

He further added ” We have got a lot of very highly talented youngsters and if you look at the results of our Indian players through this tournament , we can’t blame them all. Our Indian talent has been outstanding. Our scouting was good. ”

Ricky Ponting’s  views on the bowling department  and how functional they have been this season

When asked about young Sandeep Lamichhane who got every one’s attention , he said ” Sandeep bowled really well in the last three games. If you look back at the start of the tournament and what out starting eleven might have looked like , if you put a Rabada and a Chris Morris into that side, with probably a Maxwell , it is pretty hard to fit Sandeep into the starting eleven . ”

” We mixed and matched with Plunkett, Boult, Christian and so on , trying to find the right sort of combination that was going to suit different conditions around the country” the Australian legend added.

Well , all in all , Delhi Daredevils couldn’t get the right players to strike the chord for them this season, but for the long run they did manage to find a box full of talents for the franchise. With head coach Ponting by their side to nurture the young talents,DD probably can expect to enjoy a terrific run with the players next season.
