It came as a shock to the cricket fans when AB De Villiers, popularly known as the Superman of Cricket took the decision of retiring from International Cricket. AB De Villiers posted a message on his twitter handle and broke the news to the World, few days after his team RCB got knocked out from IPL.
He made his debut for South Africa back in 2004 and was a part of 228 ODIs , 114 Tests, and 78 T20is. Ab De Villiers was one of the most lethal and destructive batsmen of the present times and averaged 50+ in both Tests and ODIs.
He had scored 9577 runs at an average of 53.5 with 25 centuries in 228 ODIs, 8765 test runs in 114 matches with 22 centuries at an average of 50.66 and 10 half centuries 78 T20is
Ab De Villiers also known as MR.360 is one of the greatest batsmen of present generation.
He holds numerous records under his name including the fastest to 50, 100, 150 in the International cricket.
“It’s time for others to take over. I have had my turn, and to be honest, I am tired. It is a tough decision, I have thought long and hard about it and I would like to retire while decent cricket. ” said the Superman of cricket.
He further added, ” After the fantastic series wins against India and Australia, now feels the right time to step aside. IT won’t be right for me to pick and choose where and when, and in what format I play for the proteas. For the Green and Gold, it must be everything or nothing.”
Performance in recent time
He took some time off from test cricket from January 2016 to December 2017 and was eyeing for a participation in the Worldcup going to be held in 2019. He had also stepped down from the role of skipper way back in 2017 and returned to the test unit as a complete batsman in the series against Zimbabwe.
This year in IPL, he enjoyed some terrific run with the bat. He amassed 480 runs in 12 games at a staggering average of 53.33 but his efforts went in vain as RCB got knocked out following a loss against Rajasthan Royals by a 30 run margin and thus ended the season at 6th position in the points table.
Hailed as a ‘colossus’ after retirement
Cricket South Africa’s chief executive Thabang Moore paid tribute to Mr. 360 after his decision of quitting from International cricket became viral over the Internet. He said ” AB has been a colossus on the world stage for well over a decade and we are indeed grateful that most of this time he has been wearing the colors of our beloved Proteas. ”
He further added, “His [AB’s] ability to improvise has made him known as ‘MR 360 degrees’ in white ball cricket and we will never ever forget those remarkable innings that earned him the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in ODI cricket.”
South Africa have suffered a major blow following AB’s decision of retirement. AB De Villiers has been one of the all-time greats of South Africa who enjoys a massive fan following from fans across the nation. His departure from international cricket has left a deep void in the South African cricket as well as the world cricket.
A man with zero haters, he has been a gentleman of the game who managed to excite the spectators with his style of cricket. His ability to turn the course of the game at any point in the middle with his innovative shot selections is something that will be remembered for ages.
