Sweden vs England would surely be remembered by the English fans for ages. Also, it won’t be surprising, if they hail it as the game of the decade. And why not? It’s the first time after 1990, that the England team has finally managed to bag a seat for themselves in the semifinals, something which even David Beckham’s group failed to do during their period.
Some well-groomed passes, crosses and headers, backed by the un-shattering defence and ripping offence made the day for England.
3 reasons why Sweden vs England made the English fans go haywire form the first instant!
England totally eclipsed Sweden in the battle for semifinals
England played when it mattered the most. They were considered as a weakling from the start of the tournament. Also, their victories against Panama and Tunisia brought them more harm than good.
They weren’t the best in the business when it came to defeating any big guns of the tournament. On the other hand, Sweden was considered the top favourites before tonight’s mind-boggling contest.
All this talk revolving around Sweden’s ability to decimate the big names went into nothing when they received a taste of their own medicine.
Even they wouldn’t have anticipated such a horrendous exit from a team which had been receiving flak from the start of the world cup. But, the fact remains, that England did outplay Sweden in the engrossing contest that ensued.
What’s astonishing, is that Sweden looked pretty lethal with their offence and defence and looked extravagant in the initial 20-30 minutes of the game. But, the moment Maguire sent the ball down the nets, things started to fall away from Sweden’s hands.
They couldn’t do anything to get back on their game. Whatever plans that they had devised prior to the contest, got wiped out from the front by the English unit.
There wasn’t a moment in the game when the English team sulked while putting up a solid defence. The defenders were just too brilliant in their game and didn’t allow even the slightest of the opportunity for the Swedish attackers to get past them.
John Stones, for instance, looked like a Mountain, totally unshakable on the back and forth. He ensured that there’s no way the ball could rip apart the defence through any aerial mechanism.
Likewise, the English stalwarts Kevin Tripper, Kyle Walker and Ashley Young didn’t commit to any mistake. They saved the day for England and prevented their team from falling into the state of a predicament.
Kyle did have some slips and misses in the first half of the game, still, England had total control of the game. Not even for once, was the Swedish unit allowed the opportunity to get the better of the three lions.
Jordon Pickford you beauty!
It is time for the English goalkeeper to receive a knighthood in exchange for his contributions to the game of football. He is perhaps a major reason behind England’s rise to the semifinal stages of the World Cup.
Football fraternity looked to his awe, following his series of scintillating saves in each of the World cup contest. Perhaps, it was the save of the day, when he denied the Swedish player in going for a goal.
Pickford’s second save was in the 2nd half of the contest when he saved a stunner to safeguard their team from a levelling tally. If he hadn’t have saved it, the outcome that we know might have been slightly different.
