When it comes to managing your Apple devices and services, your Apple ID is the key to who you are. Even though this ID looks simple, it works very well with the Apple ecosystem.
On its support site, Apple says “iCloud account,” but an iCloud account is just a part of an Apple ID account. You might hear the terms “iCloud” and “Apple ID” used interchangeably, but it’s fine to talk about either one.
So, what happens if you forget the password for your Apple ID? There’s no need to worry, thankfully. We’ll show you several ways to reset the Apple ID password that goes with your Apple ID.
If You Have Two-Factor Authentication Enabled
With two-factor authentication (2FA), you can only get into your account on the web and from devices you trust. An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 9 or later, or a Mac with OS X El Capitan or later, could be a trusted device.
When you sign in for the first time on a new device, you’ll need your password and a six-digit verification code shown on your other devices or sent to your phone number. By entering the code, you are telling the new device that you trust it.
Unless you sign out, delete the device, or change your password, you won’t need that verification code again. If you have 2FA turned on, you can change the password for your Apple ID or iCloud from any trusted device.
1. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on an iPhone or iPad
Make sure your device has iOS 10 or later before moving on. Then open the app called Settings. Tap [Your Name] > Password & Security, and then tap Change password.
Then, enter the passcode you use to get into your device.
On the screen that says “Change Password,” type a new password in both boxes, then tap “Change.” You can now use this new password for your Apple ID on all of your other devices.

2. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on a Mac
If you are using macOS Catalina or later, open the Apple menu, go to System Preferences, and then click Apple ID. In older versions of macOS, go to System Preferences > iCloud, click Account Details, and then click Security.
Click Password & Security, and then click Change Password. If you are asked for a password for an administrator’s account, type it in and click OK.
In the box that comes up, type in your new password and then type it again in the Verify field. Click Change then. When you next use one of your other devices, it will ask you for the new password.

3. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on the iForgot Website
Go to the iForgot website from Apple. Type in your Apple ID and click the Continue button.
Apple shows the phone numbers linked to an Apple ID (the numbers are hidden and only the last two digits are shown). Enter the phone number you use with your Apple ID and click Continue.
On your trusted devices, a dialog box shows up, just like when you use 2FA. On the website, you can also see a list of all of your Apple devices. When you see the message “Reset Password,” click or tap Allow.
Enter the passcode for your device or the admin password for macOS, and then click Continue. Enter a new password, type it again in the Verify field, and then tap Next or click Change. Now, your password is different. You might have to enter it again in more than one place.

4. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password Using the Apple Support App
You can reset your Apple ID password on a friend or family member’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you can’t get into any of your own devices.
Ask the owner of the device to first get the Apple Support app. Tap Passwords & Security under Subject. Tap Reset Apple ID password. Tap Get Started, and then tap A different Apple ID.
Enter the Apple ID whose password you need to reset, tap Next, and then follow the steps on your screen until you get a confirmation.
If you can’t download the Apple Support app because the device uses iOS 9 to iOS 12, use the older Find My iPhone app instead.
If You Use Two-Step Verification
Apple had two-step verification before 2FA. Apple sends a short number code to other devices through the Find My iPhone system in iOS and a text message. These codes couldn’t be read by Macs.
The 14-character recovery code is also used by the old system. If your account got locked and you lost the recovery code, you might not be able to get into it again.
If your device is running iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan or earlier, you can use two-step verification. When a device gets newer software, its security settings change automatically from two-step verification to two-factor authentication (2FA).
5. How to Reset Your Apple ID Password With Two-Step Verification Enabled
To reset an Apple ID that uses two-step verification, you need the recovery key and a trusted phone number or device. Do these things:
- Go to Apple’s iForgot website.
- Enter your Apple ID email and click Continue.
- Select the option to reset your password and hit Continue again.
- Type in your recovery code and choose Continue.
- Select a trusted device.
- Enter the confirmation code.
- Select a new password, then click Reset Password.
Apple’s support document on resetting a two-step verification password shows that you need at least two of your Apple ID password, a trusted device, and your recovery key to sign in successfully.
If you lose two of these things, you might never be able to get back into your account. You don’t have any other choices, so you have to make a new Apple ID.
