Which Cast Members of the Show Are Still Living?

Ron Howard

Ronald William Howard, born in Duncan, Oklahoma on March 1, 1954 to actors Rance and Jean Howard, debuted on The Griffith Show as Opie Taylor at the tender age of six. Years later, he played the almost as clean-cut adolescent Richie Cunningham on Happy Days to remove himself from the charming, innocent reputation he had created as a young Taylor.

Howard ultimately opted to leave his position as a writer and producer on the ABC sitcom in order to concentrate on filmmaking. Grand Theft Auto was an audience favourite, and his succeeding pictures from major studios, Splash and Night Shift, both performed well at the box office.

Parenthood, Apollo 13, and Ransom were successive successes for Howard. In 2002, when A Beautiful Mind won two Academy Awards, including Best Director, he expressed relief to TAF.

The film adaptation of Howard’s novel Hillbilly Elegy was published in 2020, and he just stated that he will act as executive producer on a documentary about the famed television chef Julia Child. His brother, Clint, also appeared on The Andy Griffith Show, and he and his brother are co-authoring a memoir titled The Boys, which will be published in October 2021. Recent records indicate that Howard and his wife Cheryl have been married for 46 years.

Keith Thibodeaux

Is Andy Griffith Still Alive

Keith Thibodeaux, who was born in 1950 in Louisiana and portrayed Opie’s best friend Johnny Paul Jason on the comedy, was not a key cast member. After completing his role as Little Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy and The Desi-Lucy Comedy Hour, he began making cameo appearances on Griffith almost immediately.

Thibodeaux, one of the few surviving original cast members, recently reflected on his time on The Andy Griffith Show, telling The Austin Chronicle, “Working on The Andy Griffith Show was a tremendous experience. The set was more laid-back and country… [than I Love Lucy]; the actors were essentially in character. Andy would play checkers with the makeup artist, and he would frequently play the guitar with the cast on his back. It was a terrific, straightforward set.”

She decided to leave the show after perhaps a dozen episodes, and the former Father Knows Best star went on to star in other television series, including the 1970s big hit The Odd Couple.

Mary Eleanor Donahue was born on April 19, 1937, and her final television appearance occurred in 2011 on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, according to IMDb.

The Andy Griffith Show, starring Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, debuted in September 1960 on the CBS television network. Taylor, a widower, served as both sheriff and town sage in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry during the show’s run. The show’s interiors were filmed at Desilu Studios, while exteriors were filmed in Culver City, California, at Forty Acres.

From 1960 through 1965, Don Knotts, a lifetime friend of Griffith’s, portrayed Taylor’s best friend and comic sidekick, Deputy Barney Fife, on the show. Initially, he was also Taylor’s cousin, but in later episodes, they just stated that they had been childhood friends.

Knotts and Frances Bavier garnered multiple Emmy Award nominations and victories for their comedic performances during the life of the show, while Griffith was never recognised.

In 1967, Griffith signed to CBS for one additional season of the show. However, he eventually departed the show to concentrate on his film career and other endeavours. Mayberry R.F.D. continued the series with Ken Berry as a widowed farmer and several of the original cast members in various roles.
