How Big is NSFW Reddit?
This month, a post by Reddit user Flashman that shows all of the NSFW subreddits in 2015 was very popular. You can look at the image below or use the interactive map to see how big NSFW Reddit really is and how similar the top subreddits of today and 2015 are.
Each circle in this image is an NSFW subreddit, and the size of the circle depends on how many people subscribe to that subreddit. More people have signed up for the sub if the circle is bigger.
If you look closely, you’ll see that the circles are connected by lines. In the section called “Related Links,” these lines show where one community links to another. The person who made the map says, “The algorithm in this paper is used to figure out what the different colors mean.”
If you spend some time zooming in on the smaller dots on the interactive map, you’ll see that there’s a dot for almost every type of porn you can think of, or one that’s close to what you’re looking for.
The same goes for the categories on Redditlist. You can scroll through eight pages, or nearly 900 subreddits, to see them all. (And yes, the links are included on Redditlist, in case you want to visit each subreddit directly).
Many Redditors spoke up when they saw this information.
“This just goes to show how much the ‘category’ tab on Pornhub needs to be expanded,” said one Reddit user.
“As a woman, I’m always surprised by how many young girls are willing to post naked pictures on a site where millions of strangers can see them, even though they don’t get paid for it. I’m not a prude. So I’m not at all against this.
I can also see how it might be exciting to know that people are looking at your naked body and getting a kick out of it. And getting compliments is part of it (boosts their confidence).
But I guess what surprises me is how young a lot of these people are and how one-sided it is (a lot more girls than guys doing it). But since most people on Reddit are men, I guess it’s not a big surprise,” said another user.

How NSFW Reddit Has Changed Over Time
You’ll notice that the top three NSFW subreddits in 2015 were the same as they are now: gonewild, nsfw, and realgirls. But there are a few things that are different. In 2015, r/imgoingtohellforthis was one of the top five NSFW subreddits.
It is no longer one of the top 10 NSFW subreddits, and Reddit has taken it down completely. Content in that sub was said to be fatphobic, misogynistic, racist, and other ways discriminatory.
But not all of the offensive posts on these NSFW subreddits have been taken down. Even though not all racialized porn is necessarily racist, AsiansGoneWild, which is the 10th most popular NSFW subreddit, is a mainstream porn category that often fetishizes young Asian women.
Is NSFW Reddit Ethical?
Because there is so much NSFW content on Reddit, it is impossible to know for sure if all of it is ethical porn. Some of what’s on NSFW Reddit is moral, but some of it might not be.
Reddit does have some safeguards, like making sure each subreddit is moderated, but moderators can’t be sure that every piece of content posted was made and made in an ethical way. When people post their own content, as many do on the top NSFW subreddits, it’s a safer bet that it was made in an honest way.
Different subreddits are moderated in different ways, but many moderators try to remove content from Google or Facebook and report photos that could reveal someone’s identity, like a Snapchat handle.
But because all of the content is free and some subreddits don’t allow original content, performers may not know where their videos or photos are being posted and aren’t getting paid fairly for their work.
Also, it’s rare to find videos or photos of female, queer, or trans pleasure that aren’t made with the male gaze in mind. The majority of content is of white, cis, able-bodied women.
Even though there are some bad subreddits that fetishize certain bodies, identities, or races, Reddit is at least trying to get rid of some of the most obvious ones.
