The Digital India Limelight

India’s education sector is undergoing a revolution, all thanks to availability of low-cost hand-held devices and rapid internet. Nowadays, students, teachers, parents have a variety of learning tools to choose from.

According to the director of BYJU’s, “Education in India has witnessed a paradigm shift with technological innovations in this space. Today, teachers can redefine the way children learn by combining their teaching skills with tech enabled tools. They can create a huge impact and reach out to millions of children across the globe. Integrating technology in education not only increases engagement but also simplifies the way students learn.”

The Indian education scenario has evolved over the last few years. A lot has been happening in this space and if we can approach education with the right focus and plan, technology can help us shape the way India learns and create a huge impact in the coming years. With time, we will see a host of innovative tech powered learning products which will empower and promote better learning experiences right from a child’s formative years. Children are primarily visual learners and explaining concepts with visual representations makes learning exciting and easier.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that “information technology has removed all barriers to quality education”. Behind this is a theory that technology can solve fundamental problems with India’s education system.

A report says, “Yet efforts are still fragmented and many of the more advanced innovations in online education technology remain the remit of private enterprises. In an effort to bring rural India in to the digital age, the Centre has launched the Digital India campaign. Some of this campaign’s targets include providing broadband connectivity to a quarter of a million rural villages by 2019 and making Wi-Fi connections available in schools”.

If raising learning levels is the ultimate aim rather than merely access then more thought on programme design is needed. Digital learning as a format can work better across levels, courses and streams than conventional format.
